Step 2 · Plunge the Toilet

Before attempting more invasive methods, try to clear the potential clog with a plunger. Use a flange plunger, which is designed to create a better seal in a toilet bowl. To increase effectiveness, plug the drains of the nearby sink and bathtub with wet rags. This prevents the pressure you generate from escaping through other vents, focusing it on the clog. Submerge the plunger fully in the water to create a good seal, push down gently to expel air, and then plunge vigorously in a push-and-pull motion 15-20 times. A sudden whoosh of draining water indicates you've cleared the blockage.
